Text: I Samuel 9:25-10:7

People are always desiring to know about God's leading.

God has promised to lead us.

Psalms 32:8 - I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

Proverbs 3:5-6 - (5) Trust in the Lord with all thine heart [This is our responsibility.]; and lean not unto thine own understanding [This is our responsibility.]. (6) In all thy ways acknowledge him [This is our responsibility.], and he shall direct thy paths [This is God's responsibility, and He will take care of it on the condition that we take care of our responsibilities first.].

God has promised to lead us, but how is He going to do it?

Romans 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service [This is a one-time dedication of our lives to God to live for Him and do whatever He wants us to do. This is our responsibility.]. 2 And be not conformed to this world [This means that we must stop fashioning our lives after the world system headed up by Satan. Our lives, goals, and desires should be different. This is our responsibility.]: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind [This means that we are to be putting on a different mind set from the mind set we had prior to our salvation. This is accomplished by studying the Bible and submitting our hearts and minds to its teaching. This is our responsibility.], that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God [Dedicating our lives to God, stopping our conformity to the world, and reshaping our thinking by the study of the Scriptures, which represent the mind of God, will result in our knowing and doing the will of God for our lives. It is God's responsibility to direct us in accordance with His will for our lives, and He will take care of it on the condition that we take care of our responsibilities first.].

In this message I want to show a number of truths about God's leading in your lives and mine.

I Samuel 9:25 And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.

I Samuel 9:26 And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring [i.e. dawn] of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

I Samuel 9:27 And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on [i.e. go on] before us, (and he passed on [i.e. went on ahead]), but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.

God will never lead us contrary to His Word.

A prophet who claims to have revelation contrary to God's Word - Deuteronomy 13:1-5 , Deuteronomy 18:18-22 , I John 4:1-6 .

Deuteronomy 13:1-5 - 1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, 2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; 3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him. 5 And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.

Deuteronomy 18:18-22 - 18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. 19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. 20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. 21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? 22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

I John 4:1-6 - 1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

What is God's will concerning business or marriage partners?

II Corinthians 6:14 - Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

What is God's will for evangelism?

Mark 16:15 - And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

What is God's program today? It is the local church.

What is God's will concerning sin?

I John 2:1-2 - (1) My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: (2) And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

What is God's will regarding Baptism?

Matthew 28:19 - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

I Samuel 10:1 - Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

If God is calling you into his service, how will you know that God has called you? He has promised that He will lead you. You will know. God will see to it that you do not miss His leading.

Will you know God's will for the rest of my life? You will know what you need to know at the time you need to know it, but don't expect to know all the details of what's ahead of you for the rest of your life.

In verses 2-6, Saul was promised three signs that would serve to authenticate Samuel's authority to anoint him king and to confirm God's will in the matter.

The first sign is found in verse 2.

I Samuel 10:2 When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses [i.e. donkeys] which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses [i.e. donkeys], and sorroweth [i.e. is anxious] for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

With regard to God's leading, certain questions may arise in your mind.

What if I can't afford to go?

What if my wife isn't willing to go?

What if my parents are not willing for me to go?

Don't force things. Let God work things out and remove the obstacles. If He doesn't remove them, it was not likely His will in the first place.

In verses 2-6, Saul was promised three signs that would serve to authenticate Samuel's authority to anoint him king and to confirm God's will in the matter.

The first sign was found in verse 2.

The second sign is found in verses 3-4.

I Samuel 10:3 Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids [i.e. young goats - not children], and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

I Samuel 10:4 And they will salute [i.e. greet] thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of [i.e. you will accept from] their hands.

If God leads you into His service, remember that He will meet your needs.

Philippians 4:19 - But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

In verses 2-6, Saul was promised three signs that would serve to authenticate Samuel's authority to anoint him king and to confirm God's will in the matter.

The first sign was found in verse 2.

The second sign was found in verses 3-4.

The third sign is found in verses 5-6.

If God leads you into His service, He will prepare you spiritually for what lies ahead of you.

I Samuel 10:5 After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison [i.e. an outpost (where there would be armed soldiers)] of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass [i.e. it will happen], when thou art come thither [i.e. there] to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

I Samuel 10:6 And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

The Spirit of the Lord is the Holy Spirit. His coming upon Saul designated him as God's choice of Saul to be the king of Israel.

If God is calling you into His service, you might wonder, how long will it take for Him to prepare me?

I don't know, but I don't have to know. God knows, and He is the One who is going to do the preparation.

Actually, God prepares us as we go. His preparation is constant and cumulative. He prepared me for my being a youth pastor by teaching Sunday School and working in the youth group as a teenager. He prepared me for my first pastorate by using me as a youth pastor. He prepared me for starting a church by giving me pastoral experience in my first pastorate. He prepared me to teach Greek in a Bible college and to administrate a Bible college by starting a church which I pastored for 21 years where I started a local-church Bible institute and an academy. He used my experience in the Bible college to write New Testament Commentaries. He used my experience in pastoring churches, teaching in Bible colleges and high schools to prepare me to pastor the Central Baptist Church; and He continues to prepare me for whatever lies ahead. And what He does for me, He also does for you.

I Samuel 10:7 And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.

God's will will be so clear that you will not possibly miss it, or God cannot be trusted to keep His word of directing your paths as He promised in Proverbs 3:5-6 .
