Text: Daniel 11:36-45

DANIEL'S PROPHECIES

CONCERNING THE NATIONS

INTRODUCTION:

In Daniel 11 a remarkable section of detailed prophecy is found. It starts with four Persian kings (v. 2) and then includes Alexander the Great (vv. 3-4), followed by the Ptolemies and Seleucids until Antiochus Epiphanes (vv. 5-20), and then includes Antiochus Epiphanes himself (vv. 21-35). All the details of these predictions have since been literally fulfilled.

Then, after the Ptolemies and Seleucids, Daniel gives a prophecy about Antichrist which is yet to be fulfilled (vv. 36-45). Although the prophecies of chapter 11 were still future at the time Daniel wrote them, verses 1-35 have now been fulfilled historically; whereas, verses 36-45 are still awaiting fulfillment in the future.

In Daniel 11 we have already seen -

I. DANIEL'S PROPHECY CONCERNING FOUR KINGS OF PERSIA - 11:2

These four kings are Cambyses (530-522 B.C.), Pseudo-Smerdis (522-521), Darius I Hystaspes (also called Darius the Great, 521-486 B.C.) and Xerxes (486-465 B.C.), also known as Ahasuerus in the book of Esther. He was opposed to Greece.

In Daniel 11 we have also already seen -

II. DANIEL'S PROPHECY CONCERNING GREECE - 11:3-4

Alexander the Great is the mighty king who will rule with great dominion and do according to his will. His kingdom was represented by the bronze belly and thighs in Nebuchadnezzar's image in Daniel 2 and by the winged leopard in Daniel 7:6 . Alexander the Great was also the notable horn of the he goat in Daniel 8:6-8 . He conquered everything from Greece to India

Upon Alexander's death at age 32 from malaria and complications of alcoholism, his kingdom was divided among four of his generals. These four generals represent the four heads of the leopard in 7:6 and the four notable horns on the he goat in 8:8. The two generals of Alexander which concern the Biblical record are Ptolemy and Seleucus. Ptolemy and his descendants ruled over Egypt; whereas, Seleucus and his descendants ruled over Syria and Mesopotamia.

In Daniel 11 , we have also seen -

III. DANIEL'S PROPHECY CONCERNING EGYPT AND SYRIA, I.E. CONCERNING THE PTOLEMIES AND THE SELEUCIDS - 11:5-20

Verses 5-35 describe the ongoing warfare between the kings of the South, i.e. the Ptolemies, and the kings of the North, i.e. the Seleucids, which lasted about 200 years following the death of Alexander the Great.

As they fought with each other, Israel was in the middle. To get from Egypt to Syria or from Syria to Egypt, the armies would go through Palestine; and this would adversely affect the Jewish people.

In my comments which follow in today's message, I have relied heavily on the historical data found in The Bible Knowledge Commentary: Old Testament.

In Daniel 11 we have also seen -

IV. DANIEL'S PROPHECY CONCERNING ANTIOCHUS IV EPIPHANES - 11:21-35

He was a Seleucid king from Syria.

Finally, we come to -

V. DANIEL'S PROPHECY CONCERNING ANTICHRIST - 11:36-45

11:36-45 - This section gives details of Antichrist's future career.

This prophecy has not yet been fulfilled.

We have seen him previously in Daniel 7:7-8 and 7:24-25.

In Daniel 7:7-8 - a fourth beast is seen. The fourth beast represents Rome. The 10 horns are explained in verse 24, and the little horn (Antichrist) in verses 24-25. This empire would cease; but after hundreds of years, it would be revived. It is this revived Roman Empire which will have the ten kings and the little horn or Antichrist.

Daniel 7:7 a - After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it. . . .: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

This part of verse 7 has already been at least partially fulfilled by the Roman Empire, which at present appears to be extinct. However, it also refers to a continuation of the Roman Empire in the Tribulation. We refer to it as the revived Roman Empire. The rest of verse 7 and all of verse 8 refers to the revived Roman Empire and its successor, the one-world ruler, the Antichrist.

Daniel 7:7 b - . . . and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

Daniel 7:8 - I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

The little horn represents the Antichrist and pictures what will happen in the tribulation.

Daniel 7:24-25 - 24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another [i.e. the antichrist] shall rise after them; and he [i.e. the antichrist] shall be diverse from the first [i.e. first ones, former ones, previous ones], and he shall subdue three kings. 25 And he shall speak great words against the most High [i.e. against God], and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws [In promoting his anti-Christian, anti-Jewish program, he will abandon existing laws and institute his own system.]: and they [i.e. the saints of the most High] shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time [i.e. for forty-two months or 3 1/2 years].

We have also seen the antichrist in Daniel 9:26-27 .

Daniel 9:26-27 - 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come [i.e. the Romans] shall destroy the city [i.e. Jerusalem] and the sanctuary [i.e. the Temple in A.D. 70] [It is the people of the prince that shall come, but it is not the prince that shall come who destroyed Jerusalem in A.D. 70. The prince that shall come is the antichrist, also known as the little horn. He is the head of the Revived Roman Empire. His people are, therefore, Romans, but not the same individuals led by Titus.]; and the end thereof shall be with a flood [i.e. Jerusalem will be leveled as if with a flood], and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he [i.e. the prince that shall come (the Antichrist)] shall confirm the covenant with many [i.e. with many Jewish people] for one week [i.e. for 7 years - at the beginning of the tribulation period]: and in the midst of the week [i.e. after 3 1/2 years] he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation [i.e. offering] to cease [Antichrist will break his covenant and desecrate the Temple by demanding worship of himself in it.], and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate [the prince (or ruler) who shall come (i.e. the antichrist) will place abominations on a wing of the temple, i.e. in the temple. As a result of the abominations the antichrist places in the temple, the antichrist will make the temple desolate.], even until the consummation, and that [i.e. the end which is] determined [i.e. decreed by God] shall be poured upon the desolate [i.e. The antichrist will continue to persecute the Jews until the end that God has decreed is poured out upon him (i.e. the antichrist) at the second coming of Christ.].

We will see the antichrist again in Revelation of Jesus Christ 13:1-9 .

Revelation of Jesus Christ 13:1-9 - 1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion [these animals were seen previously in Daniel - the lion representing Babylon, the bear representing Persia, and the leopard representing Greece.]: and the dragon [i.e. Satan] gave him [i.e. the antichrist] his power, and his seat [i.e. throne], and great authority. 3 And I saw one of his heads [i.e. one of the seven heads of the beast - i.e. imperial government] as it were wounded to death [i.e. the Roman Empire]; and his deadly wound was healed [i.e. forming the Revived Roman Empire]: and all the world wondered after the beast. 4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast [i.e. imperial government as well as the antichrist]: and they worshipped the beast [i.e. the antichrist], saying, Who is like unto the beast [i.e. the antichrist]? who is able to make war with him? 5 And there was given unto him [i.e. to the antichrist] a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. 6 And he [i.e. the antichrist] opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.

Daniel 11:36 And the king [i.e. willful king, the Antichrist] shall do according to his will [i.e. as he pleases]; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods [Note II Thessalonians 2:4 - Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.], and shall prosper [i.e. he will be successful] till the indignation [i.e. God's indignation or wrath against Israel] be accomplished [it is called the time of Jacob's trouble (Jeremiah 30:7 )]: for that that is determined [i.e. what has been determined] shall be done [i.e. accomplished].

Daniel 11:37 Neither shall he [i.e. the antichrist] regard the God [i.e. God is plural in Hebrew. So, it can be a majestic plural in reference to the Triune God or God the Father. If so, it would suggest that he is a Jew. However, it can also mean gods. Here, in this context it seems best to understand it as gods. Thus, it does not mean that antichrist must be a Jew] of his fathers [i.e. he will have no respect for his religious heritage], nor the desire of women [i.e. the desire of women was to be the mother of the Messiah - Some regard this as indicating that he must be a Jew.], nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself [i.e. exalt himself or set himself up] above all [i.e. above them all, (i.e. above all gods) - he will demand that everyone worship him].

Daniel 11:38 But in his estate [i.e. instead, in their place] shall he honour the God of forces [i.e. the god of fortresses, a god of military strength]: and a god whom his fathers knew not [might this be Satan?] shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things [he will have to accumulate vast wealth in order to honor the god of military strength with gold, silver, precious stones, and pleasant or precious things.].

Daniel 11:39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds [i.e. against the strongest fortresses] with [the help of] a strange [i.e. foreign] god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory [i.e. advance this strange god's glory] [Those who submit to his authority will be put in positions of power. He will greatly honor them. Might this refer to the ten kings?]: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide [i.e. distribute - perhaps at a reduced price for those who submit to his authority] the land for gain [Through this he will gain a great following.].

11:40-45 - In the tribulation period the king of the south and the king of the north will attempt a pincer movement against Antichrist (v. 40). But with Palestine as his base (v. 41), he will first defeat Egypt, then Libya and Ethiopia (Sudan).

Daniel 11:40 And at the time of the end [i.e. during the last 3 1/2 years of the tribulation] shall the king of the south [i.e. this king seems to refer to Egypt in this context, joined with the Lybians and Ethiopians (Sudanese)] push at him [i.e. at Israel, therefore at the antichrist who has a treaty with Israel]: and the king of the north shall come against him [i.e. against Israel, therefore against the antichrist who has a treaty with Israel] like a whirlwind [i.e. like a storm], with chariots, and with horsemen [i.e. cavalry], and with many ships; and he [i.e. the antichrist] shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow [i.e. overwhelm them] and pass over [i.e. pass through them].

He (i.e. the antichrist) will have entered into a covenant with the people of Israel, binding that nation as a part of his domain (Daniel 9:27 ). Any attack, then, against the land of Israel will be an attack against him with whom Israel will be joined by covenant.

Daniel 11:41 He [i.e. the antichrist] shall enter also into the glorious land [i.e. Israel], and many countries shall be overthrown [i.e. he will overwhelm many countries; he will gain control over many countries]: but these shall escape out of his [i.e. out of the antichrist's] hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon [i.e. the antichrist will not gain control over Edom, Moab, or Ammon].

Daniel 11:42 He [i.e. the antichrist] shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

Daniel 11:43 But he [i.e. the antichrist] shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians (i.e. the Sudanese) shall be at his [i.e. at the antichrist's] steps [i.e. shall be part of his dominion].

Daniel 11:44 But tidings [i.e. news] out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him [i.e. will trouble the antichrist]: therefore he [i.e. the antichrist] shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away [i.e. to annihilate] many [of the invaders].

Tidings out of the east and out of the north may relate to the armies of Rev. 9:13-21; 16:12. The threat of these armies will cause Antichrist to return to Palestine, making his headquarters between Jerusalem and the Mediterranean (v. 45).

Revelation of Jesus Christ 9:13-21 - 13 And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. 15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year [i.e. for this very time], for to slay the third part of men. 16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand [i.e. 200,000,000]: and I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. 18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. 19 For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt. 20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: 21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

Revelation of Jesus Christ 16:12 - And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

Daniel 11:45 And he [i.e. the antichrist] shall plant the tabernacles [i.e. tents] of his palace between the seas [i.e. between the Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea] in the glorious holy mountain [likely Jerusalem]; yet he [i.e. the antichrist] shall come to his end, and none shall help him [His coming to his end will be at the hands of Christ at the second coming of Christ.].

Revelation of Jesus Christ 19:11-21 - 11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. 17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; 18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. 19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. 20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

CONCLUSION:

God's program is moving right on schedule. The next event in prophecy is the rapture of believers in the church age. Immediately following this rapture, Daniel's 70th week will begin. It is also known as the Tribulation or the Time of Jacob's Trouble.
